Your child's first visit to the dentist is a very important one. The experience that day will affect their attitude about dentistry in the years to come.

We'll deal with any emergency problems first. If your child is in pain, we'll do our best to alleviate it. If there are no emergency problems, these are the things we'll do at the first visit:

  • Examine lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, tonsil area, hard and soft palate
  • Check the growth and development of the jaws and teeth
  • Check the condition of the teeth and gums
  • Perform a thorough cleaning
  • Receive a topical fluoride treatment

We'll take X-ray films if necessary. We'll also evaluate any tongue, lip, cheek or thumb habits that may affect the development of attractive teeth. We’ll ask you about your child's health history. Then, we'll discuss our findings and recommendations with you.

We’ll explain the amount of time and money that necessary treatment will involve and answer any of your questions at this time. Because this first visit is easy and enjoyable, it helps to overcome many of the fears the child may be feeling.

We’ll also identify your child's fluoride needs. If you don't live in a fluoridated water community, we might prescribe fluoride drops or tablets, or recommend application of a fluoride gel to your child's teeth.
